It takes me 3 days to wake up
in the morning
I’m not a morning person, never have been and I am actively working on becoming a morning person, the struggle is real. When I was growing up it was a well known fact to my parents and sister that I needed a buffer time before anyone could talk to me because I would rip their head off…..yeah I really hated mornings.
However since adulting I realized my morning routine is not exactly sustainable, waking up 20 minutes before I have to leave the house does not make for a pleasant morning, and who really wants to go to work after speeding through the house not being able to find anything. Then add in the unnecessary road rage because you’re late for work and everyone forgot how to drive that morning (590 sucks) it’s just a lot to rinse and repeat five days a week.
So for the past week I have been getting up at 6:30 am, a whole hour and ten minutes earlier then normal. As much as I hate waking up early, I do love the new found freedom of being able to meander around the house, grabbing breakfast, taking my time getting ready and doing my makeup. It’s a whole new world, I actually do not feel frazzled when I get to work and I am no longer hangrey which was really impeding my work enthusiasm.
As someone who suffers with anxiety this has actually lessened my anxious mornings and helped me to become more productive each day.
Water is Your Friend
60% of your body is made up of water, do not skimp on the water! The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) did a study in which they discovered that nearly half of all adults living in America are not drinking enough water.
Most of the time you do not even realize that you are dehydrated, even mild dehydration has been proven to effect moods and cognitive performance. So whens a good time to drink a glass of water? Perhaps after sleeping for a few hours would be a solid time to chug that glass. Pro tip, before going to bed fill a glass with water and leave it at your bedside, once you wake up you are ready to go before your feet even hit the ground.
Pre-Plan
Nothing is worse in the morning than not being able to find your things. You have no idea what you are going to wear, you can’t find matching socks, goodness knows where your keys are. It makes your morning unnecessary stressful and chaotic.
Solution: the night before you go through your clothing and pull out what you are going to be wearing. Then by your door place everything you need to take with you the following morning. These activities will take less then ten minutes every night and will alleviate so much frustration in the morning, you’ll be shocked at the difference.
Eat Breakfast
First off breakfast has the best food options then any other meal during the day. Pancakes, muffins, eggs, oatmeal, french toast, yogurt, like come on, the food is great. Take the time in the morning to sit down and get some good food into you. You have been sleeping for numerous hours and need some nourishment to start the day off right. Studies have shown that what you eat for breakfast has an effect on your energy levels for the rest of the day.
Another benefit of eating breakfast is that it jump starts your metabolism for the day, which I mean who doesn’t want to be burning calories earlier in the day.
Plan Your Day
A great way to not let your day overwhelm you is to take some time in the morning to determine your goals and tasks for the day. If you can visualize what your day is going to be like it is easier to mentally prepare for your schedule and be prepared.
Prioritize what needs to be completed and delegate the rest, however be ready to be flexible. You never know what your day may hold and you should be mentally ready to turn on a dime.
Enjoy the Ride
Morning commutes can be rough, especially is metropolitan areas. Leave yourself some wiggle room in the morning to get to your destination on time without rushing. The last thing you want is to get into a fender bender or worse first thing in the morning. Plus when you are rushing in the morning it causes you unnecessary stress which will set the tone for the rest of the day.
No one wants to be a ball of anxiety and have road rage at eight am. If you wake up a little bit earlier you can avoid a stressful commute and you may even have a little bit of extra time to pick up some coffee.
