What's not to love
AOC (Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez) had definitely made a name for herself quite quickly by defeating a 10 year incumbent for the 14th Congressional district. A winner they never saw coming due to the establishment underestimating a young Puerto Rican women bartender from the Bronx. They wrote her off without realizing the threat she posed.
AOC took office at the age of 29 making her the youngest women to ever serve in the United States Congress. Alexandria is an alumni from Boston University where she majored in international relations and economics and graduated cum laude in 2011.
She was not a stranger to politics when she ran, during her time at college she served as an intern for U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy in the field of foreign affairs and immigration issues. She stated that since she was the only Spanish speaker, she was the one handling calls at the age of 19 to assist individuals frantically looking for their family members who has been taken by ICE. She assisted in helping them navigate the difficult and overly complicated system.
Much to the dismay of the older members of Congress from both sides of the aisle her ability to connect with the youth of America is outstanding.
She has continued to help speak for the youth of America that is looking for positive change and there have been so many instances where she has really stepped up and is a beacon of hope in these very trying times.
AOC stated back in 2017 that, “Women like me aren’t suppose to run for office…I wasn’t born into a rich or powerful family. My dad died when I was a teenager, I’ve waitressed my way through hard times and dealt with disappointment. The dress I am wearing is from a thrift shop. The ring on my finger is my mother’s – a reminder of every floor she’s mopped so that her daughter could have a chance.”
She took a chance for her community and for what she believed in. So many people can relate to her in so many different ways, she is a millennial, just trying to do what is right in some of the most difficult and disheartening circumstances.
One of the many reasons that I fell in love with her is that fact that she could be your cousin, your sister, your best friend, she is an everyday person that you could stand next to in an elevator and connect to. AOC is not a multi-millionaire telling you everything would be better if you just budgeted better, she has been there and she understand the struggles so many are going through.
A Beacon of Hope
AOC’s charm and knowledge has made her an unthinkable opponent. She literally is the embodiment of millennial beliefs and she is not afraid to go head to head even with the fiercest adversaries.
A newcomer to D.C., she went with little to no friends and no connections yet has been able to make waves that the establishment has not been able to create in decades. The best part, she has not lost her self in the process.
She brings forth these ideas that at one point were considered “too radical” and progressive yet she speaks on them with such clarity that people are realizing these ideas are not as radical as they have been painted in the past.
The white bland hallways of the Capital building which are usually indistinguishable from each other now hold a site to behold. One office stands out from the rest. An explosion of thousands of neon post-it notes covers the wall with affirmations towards AOC. It is said that if you go at the right time you can see groups of people, usually women gathered in tears at the sight of it.
She is a beacon of hope during the times when it seems that the American experiment failed in every way possible. Many people hate her because she is the prime example of how great America can be if racism and inequality was a thing of the past, she is a educated young minority women who is not afraid to tell the racist patriarchy that has ran America for centuries where to shove it.
A Millennial Troll
The GOP can see greatness in others rapidly, so of course they realized AOC was a threat to their racist and corrupt agenda and she is the epitome of everything they want to stomp out. So what do they do when they see a powerful young women, they try to belittle and embarrass her on a national stage. AOC did not have the GOP level of skeletons in her closet so the only thing they were able to dig up was a video of her in her college years recreating the Breakfast Club Dance. (Oh so scandalous)
Of course since they are as old as paper they did not estimate our favorite millennial trolling them.
Not only did AOC see the humor in all this, she decided to respond in the best way possible. She recreated the video from her brand new office at Capital Hill. Get it girl.
The Corruption Game
She loves to expose the flaws in our Government in ways that anyone can understand.
I just love this video of AOC in which she played a five-minute lightening game with members of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform.
I highly recommend you take the time to watch this video in which she so elegantly and so effortlessly exposes America’s flawed campaign finance system. I love that she asks these questions in such a way that they are not able to twist their answers to fit the narrative they want, the must answer truthfully.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is a person we can all look up to, a person we can all strive to be more like. A person willing to take chances, a person willing to go above and beyond for her community, a person that will look at a daunting obstacle and say let’s start here. We could all be a little bit more like AOC
