This law was created and enforced to help conserve and protect the wildlife and environment. In New York state alone over 23 billion plastic bags are used and discarded in one year. The single use plastic bags handed out at these retailers take 10 – 20 years to decompose.
Governor Cuomo created a campaign entitled, “BYOBagNY” stating,
“Right this minute, plastic bags are hanging in trees, blowing down the streets, filling up our landfills and polluting our lakes, rivers and streams — all hurting our environment,” said Cuomo. “We took bold action to protect our environment and ban these environmental blights and with this campaign we’re going to make sure New Yorkers are ready and have all the facts.”
I see this as a great step in the right direction, if there are small changes everyone can make to have a huge impact in protecting the environment we live in, why not? Grocery shopping and shopping in general is something you have to do often anyway so why not invest in reusable bags that will make your life easier. Because let’s be honest most of these stores are not investing in the good quality paper bags like Trader Joe’s with their handles. (Come on Wegmans, we know you can afford better bags) .
